A positive experience is how industrial recruitment candidate, Paul Dormizzi, describes his first encounter with Asset Recruitment.

“Can you start tomorrow?” was the final question Paul Dormizzi was asked when interviewing for a role at Soudal in Hamilton. Put forward by Asset Recruitment’s industrial recruitment specialist, Pearl Parsons, for a temporary pick packing role in Soudal’s warehouse, Paul’s suitability for the role was both a reflection of his experience and Pearl’s due diligence in matching client and candidate.

“I’d never applied for a job through a recruitment agency before, and to be honest, I stumbled across Asset Recruitment by accident. But it was a really positive experience,” Paul says.

Recognising a transferable skill set

Originally from England, Paul had 15 years of experience working in the aviation industry. A move to New Zealand for his partner’s career meant Paul was looking for a fresh start. “We originally settled in Palmerston North, then lived in Napier for a brief period of time, before being transferred to Hamilton.

“I’d previously worked in middle management but, being in a new country and starting afresh, I was happy to start at the bottom and work my way up.”

Pearl saw it another way.

Paul came to Asset with a really impressive resume of transferable skills,” Pearl says. “Although the bulk of his experience was in the aviation industry, his management skills, methodical approach to systems and processes and his personality meant I felt more than comfortable putting him forward for higher level positions.”

Matching candidate with client

Soudal, home to iconic brands such as Gorilla, Fox and Metalex, was looking for a temporary picker packer in their Hamilton warehouse, one of the most common roles Pearl has on her books. “I went for the interview on Thursday and they asked if I could start the next day,” says Paul. He negotiated a Monday start.

The role suited Paul down to the ground but, more importantly, the company culture and working environment at Soudal meant it wasn’t long before Paul was employed full time and promoted. Today he’s Team Leader Dispatch of Soudal’s warehouse.

“Soudal has a team of amazing people,” says Paul. “It’s a really fulfilling place to work, everyone is really approachable and friendly, nothing is an issue. It feels like family.”

Despite being made permanent, Paul has continued his connection with Asset Recruitment, now turning to Pearl whenever he needs temporary staff in his warehouse. “Pearl is very efficient in sending me through suitable candidates to fill any temporary roles,” Paul says. “Picking and packing is relatively straightforward. As a role, there’s nothing to be unsure about. It is physical, because you’re on your feet all day, but it doesn’t take long to get used to the products and processes. It’s more about personality, and Pearl is great at ensuring a good fit.”

Bucking the trend of industrial recruitment

Temporary and permanent positions within the Waikato’s industrial sector continue to be plentiful and Pearl says quality candidates are always well received.

There can be a bit of a stigma around industrial roles, but we find many candidates don’t actually realise what these positions entail,” says Pearl. “They do have the physical element to them, but these roles are often in teams where there is great camaraderie, excellent support and lots of opportunity.”

Examples of the types of roles Pearl has open include machine operators, warehouse distributors, factory supervisors, pickers and gardeners.
Industrial roles have incredible variety,” Pearl says. “And because of that variety, a candidate’s skill set can go a long way.

Paul was a prime example of this. On the surface, there’s not a lot in common between the aviation industry and an international company that manufactures and markets sealants and adhesives. However, delve a little further and Paul’s experience has enabled him to excel at Soudal and maximise opportunities that have been presented to him.”

When Paul moved to New Zealand, new experiences were always on the cards, he just hadn’t expected securing a job through a recruitment agency would be one of them. “It has been a great experience. Pearl was fantastic. She’d check in with me to ensure I was going ok, that I was enjoying the role and the company. It was, and continues to be, a very positive experience with Asset.”
