Projecting recruitment challenges for 2025. Carmel Strange, Asset’s Temporary and Contract Recruitment Manager may not have a crystal ball, but she does know how a temp workforce can be beneficial for your business.
“Survive to ‘25” was the mantra among many businesses last year, but unfortunately a more accurate representation is “Survive through ‘25”. The market is tough and everyone’s feeling it.
Recruitment trends are always a good indication of what’s happening in the business landscape, and the first quarter of 2025 started on a positive note. “We have had some great permanent and temporary roles come through but as we approach Q2 that’s started to slow down,” says Carmel. “Because unemployment is higher than normal, there’s an assumption that there are plenty of experienced candidates seeking employment; however, this isn’t the case.
So, without a crystal ball to hand, what can we expect from the remainder of 2025?
“Indications are that it’s going to be exactly the type of year we’ve come to expect – a challenging one,” says Carmel. “But those challenges will come with signs of improvement. When they do, it’s important that clients are ready to act on them and respond quickly. That’s where the benefit of employing temporary candidates really comes in.”
As the market picks up, temping is a great option to secure the required skillset without committing to a position until there’s enough workflow to confirm a permanent role. “We know from experience that the best temps are those who can hit the ground running,” says Carmel. “In challenging times, that’s more important than ever.”
Carmel says Asset’s approach to placing temps doesn’t change just because the market does. Positioning excellence is still a priority as is ensuring there’s both a skillset and a culture match with a candidate and an organisation.
“A staff member doesn’t have to be in a team for long to make a difference – good or bad,” says Carmel. “And we want to avoid the latter! There are already enough challenges out there for business owners and organisations without having the wrong candidate placed in the wrong role.”
At Asset Recruitment, candidates seeking temporary or contract work must:
- demonstrate both hard and soft skills relevant for the role
- turn up on time and act with professionalism
- understand the importance of good communication
- understand the role and show enthusiasm for the opportunity
- be able to adapt to different environments quickly and efficiently
“When a business has peaks and troughs, a temping workforce can work well,” says Carmel. “And in times like we’re experiencing at present; temping does have the potential to be a more secure option than a permanent position that may or may not be required in the long-run.”
“At Asset Recruitment, we are continually adding quality candidates to our temping books to ensure we have the skillsets our clients need, when they need them,” Carmel says.
