No more 90-day trial period – what’s the alternative?

The impending second stage of changes following the passing of the Employment Relations Amendment Act 2018 will come into play from 6 May this year. On the agenda for change is the 90-day trial period.

Implementation of the 90-day trial period for businesses with 20 employees or more will be severely restricted. So what’s the alternative for the many larger Waikato businesses?

Marcelo Sosa, Asset Recruitment’s temporary industrial recruitment consultant, says it’ll be interesting to see the effect on the temporary recruitment market. “The change in legislation could see an increase in demand for quality temporary staff.”

“Many businesses in Waikato may have viewed the 90-day trial period as a safety-net in their recruitment process. No-one wants to hire the wrong candidate. And businesses with 20 employees or more will no longer be able to protect themselves by using the trial period when hiring new staff.”

“Temping is a practical option that reduces risk. Utilising the services of recruitment companies – like the team here at Asset Recruitment, to match the right candidate for the vacant role. Our robust processes are followed with every candidate we place. We match our candidates to the right company with the right culture fit, which reduces the risk of employing a bad hire.”

“We’ve established a strong pool of industrial temps and have the largest office temping division of any Waikato recruitment company. Because of this, the team here at Asset Recruitment is in an incredibly strong position to help reduce risk for businesses looking to hire,” he says.

Asset Recruitment offers an obvious advantage to your temporary recruitment needs. As with the nature of temp work – candidates are aware that there is an end date to their assignment. However, if their performance exceeds expectations – it provides your business with the opportunity to offer them a permanent position with your company, without the concern of needing that “trial period”.

While there’ll be no change for New Zealand businesses with fewer than 20 employees, the 90-day trial period shouldn’t be used as a “get out of jail free” card. A bad hire can affect the whole team from day one. Getting it right the first time should be the focus, and this is where Asset can help.

“Asset Recruitment has an unrivalled knowledge of recruitment in the Waikato region, coupled with a strong team of temporary staff. And after more than 30 years in the business, we’re pretty good at matching the right candidates to the right roles and companies.”
